I jolted upright, looking out the window to see whether or not it was morning. Outside, I could see the newly fallen snow glimmer in the moonlight, and the snow flakes shine with a silver glow. The trees were weighted down with about two inches of snow. The train sped up as it headed downhill, and I noticed a pole with a white square nailed to it, and the square was flapping in the wind. I looked ahead, because I had heard that those notes were put there to tell conductors to pass on word that the train needed to have the tracks switched. I saw a track-change ahead, and a blue speck off in the distance in the direction that we were going to be traveling. I looked over at Jake, who was snoring, and felt a bump as we passed over the track-change. Already? But that had to be at least two hundred meters ahead
have we really sped up that much? I thought, taking note that now the speed was going quite a bit faster than we had been before. I looked over at Jake, who was snoring loudly now.
Damn, I whispered, shaking him to wake him up. Jake
Jake. Jacob! Wake up! I whispered, my voice barely slipping into my normal tone when I yelled, trying not to wake any of the other passengers.
Hn..? he muttered. The train bounced, swayed, and suddenly it felt like we were traveling over hardened earth rather than the track. Jakes eyes shot open, and he mouthed, Oh, shit, as he sprung out of his seat.
Cmon! I muttered, grabbing him by the crook of his elbow and pulling him along as I ran.
I released him as soon as he started running alongside me. We reached the gap between the cars, and I jumped over it, remembering not to jump too far or else I would smash into the other car. I landed onto the platform, lost my balance and fell back and hit the door.
Hurry! I yelled over the speeding train, forcing the cars door open. I ran inside, and found my way to the other end of the second-class car easily. I slid the door open, and jumped over this gap, landing on the edge of the platform, teetering backwards, the world moving in slow motion. I felt a pair of arms catch me, and bounce me back upright. I turned, my hands struggling with the door, and saw Jake behind me.
Tha- I started, out of breath, but noticed that the blue dot had grown much larger, and was continuing to grow as the train sped downhill. My eyes widened, and I stopped struggling with the door long enough to point at it. It is a lake! I cried, bending over and pulling my high heels off my feet and forcing the door open.
I ran as quickly as I possibly could through the third-class car, jumping when I reached the platforms, a little too hurriedly, slamming into the car. I hit it hard enough to hear a sickening pop come from my right shoulder, the one I smashed into the car with.
Ugh, I grumbled, trying to open the cars door with my good arm. It took long that I hoped it would, and I muttered curses as I realized that I was in the cargo car. There were bags of all sizes; there were oak trunks, maple trunks, blue painted trunks, green painted trunks, and an assortment of colors of bags. My eyes scanned the bags, looking for my pink and white bag with my name stitched into it in gold. I found it, and hurried over to it. I tried to reach for it with my right arm, but came to the sudden realization that I could not move my arm. I grabbed one of my smaller ones with my good arm instead, and slung it over my shoulder. I scurried out of the car, and realized I was forgetting something.
Jake?! I called, spinning around. He had never entered the cargo car, and I leaned over the rail to see if he was still on the other platform, but, he was no where in sight. Tears streamed down my face, and I saw the impending doom that awaited me if I did not jump off soon. The train was about one hundred meters away from the lake, so I climbed over the railing, and jumped off, landing in a crouching position so my legs would absorb most of the shock. I heard the cracking of a thin layer of ice, and then the splash of water, as the train was swallowed by the ice-cold lake. I tumbled over, pulling my knees up to my chest and laid in the snow, sobbing over the loss of my new friend.
